On February 24 & 25 Team Respect went on a fieldtrip to the Wauwautosa West High School Planetarium. The interactive show took us on a journey through the solar system as we visited each of the planets and learned facts about each one. We also viewed the star constellations in the February sky and learned the stories behind them. Now we want to hear more stories about different star constellations! What an awesome experience!!

One School One Book - 68 Rooms
For the past 5 weeks the entire Wilson school has been actively reading the same book. 68 Rooms has been an exciting book to share with our families and classrooms. We have been reading some chapters in class and some at home. The discussions are rich with predictions and inferences, as well as wondering how it would feel if we could have an exciting adventure like our characters Ruthie and Jack.
Our culminating activities are happening now. We were able to skype with the author, Marianne Malone. She explained how she became a writer and how she goes through the writing process. We were able to prepare and ask questions about writing and her books. It was really a wonderful experience to speak with a professional writer.
We have also created our own Thorne Room and will be creating a larger display by joining with the other classroom Thorne Rooms. We can't wait to see all of the creative miniatures next week for a gallery walk in the gym.
The Knowledge-A-Thon will also take place next week Tues. or Wed. All students will participate in class and I am confidant they will know many answers as evidenced by our great class discussions.
Thank you for all your active participation in this fun learning experience.
Fernando and his dad built this miniature room. It even has a real working ceiling fan!

November Highlights
November Fun Day Highlights!
We all look forward to the monthly PBIS incentives. This month students were able to trade in tickets earned and choose from a variety of fun activities such as; ipad time, art activity, board games, gym/outside, and dance time. As you can see the students in the dance room with me had a blast!! We also enjoyed a monthly PBIS no-contact challenge reward by wearing pajamas and munching popcorn while eating popcorn. We can't wait for the December challenge - bring it on! We are up to the challenge!

Fall Celebration!
Fall is Fun!!
We celebrated fall with a pumpkin math activity. This involved estimating the weight of a pumpkin and using a scale to weigh it, counting lines on the pumpkin, estimating the seeds and counting them all, plus describing the pumpkin with words. As you can see we enjoyed this activity immensely!!
*Thank you to all parents and students for attending a conference. We had 100% participation! It is wonderful to share the learning strengths of your child and discuss the goals we still need to work on. Thank you for all that you to do at home to help your child be successful!
**Please help your child to remember warm coats, hats, and mittens every day. Recess is fun but can seem long if we aren't dressed for the cold.

October is Fire Prevention Month
The West Allis Fire Department visited Wilson and shared information with the students about smoke alarms, fire fighter equipment, and how to stay low and yell fire. This is a good reminder for all of us and it's almost time to change the batteries in those smoke alarms! Tuesday, September 23, 2014
Fall is officially here and Room 214 is in the swing of things!!
We have been practicing our Balanced Literacy rotations every day. This consists of independent reading, writing, word work, and using technology to read articles and answer comprehension questions. We also enjoy partner reading too! The MAPS testing will finish up this week, but starting next week all students will be participating in the PALS test. This is another informative assessment of your child's spelling, vocabulary recognition, and reading ability. On Fridays we meet with our Buddy room, Mrs. Isensee's K/1 class, for fun reading and activities. Math takes place in the afternoon and all students are grouped in various Team Respect rooms so that they may receive the best individualized instruction. These room placements will change throughout the year depending on the math concept taught and your child's strength.
**Fall means chilly mornings so please help your child to remember to wear a jacket or sweatshirt to school each morning.
Enjoy a few pictures featuring our K/1 buddies!
